We have never captured more and remembered less
The average phone owner takes over a thousand photos a year now. Thirty years ago, a family might have produced thirty photos in that same year — developed at a pharmacy, sorted into an album, captioned in pen on the back or the margin. Fewer photos, but almost none of them lost their story. Ask your grandparents about a specific photo from 1994 and they can usually tell you where it was, who was there, and why it mattered. Cloud storage solved a real problem (losing photos when a phone breaks) and quietly let everyone assume it had solved a different one (losing what the photos meant). It hadn’t. It couldn’t. That was never what storage was for.

Either way, the point isn’t the tool. The point is that the story gets captured at all, in a form that outlasts the week you’d otherwise forget it in.
